Big Little League news.

On Sunday afternoon the Board of Directors for Mt. Pleasant Little League and Union Township Little League announced that the two Little League programs would merge into one program starting this spring.

Going forward the newly-formed league will be called Mt. Pleasant UT Little League.

A press release from the league’s Board of Directors read: “We are thrilled to announce that Union Township Little League and Mt. Pleasant Little League have signed an agreement and have officially merged to form Mt. Pleasant UT Little League, effective immediately. This historic decision strengthens our commitment to providing a superior Little League experience for all players in our community.”

Former Union Township Little League President Alex Edwards will assume the Presidency of the new league while former Mt. Pleasant Little President Jeremy ‘Rit’ MacDonald is the Vice President.

Historically speaking both Mt. Pleasant Little League and Union Township Little League have been excellent youth programs dating back decades. Both have played key roles in feeding the high school programs at Mt. Pleasant High School, Beal City High School and at Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart Academy also.

Mt. Pleasant Little League was initially formed in 1953 while Union Township Little League was formed in 1957 under the moniker of Union Township Kid’s League. Union Township Little League became a chartered Little League in 1980.

The move to merge has been a topic of discussion for years and it’s finally come to fruition.  Overall numbers within both Little Leagues programs fell significantly in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The merging of the league will increase playing opportunities by offering a wider range of divisions and teams all while improving competitive balance for more-competitive games.

Now the two leagues will also combine their collective resources which should allow for better fields, equipment and opportunities for development.
